Are Bleeding Gums a Big Concern for Dental Health?

Most adults experience bleeding gums at some point in their lives. A small amount of blood once in a while may not be anything to worry about. However, if your gums bleed regularly, it may be an indication of gum disease.

In this blog, Dr. Deirdre Pittman at Dental SPA in Sanford, Florida, explains the different causes of gum bleeding and ways to fix it.

What Causes Gums to Bleed?

Some of the reasons that may cause bleeding gums are:

Gum Disease

According to studies, more than 750 million people suffer from some form of gum disease. It is a serious condition that is caused due to plaque buildup. If it is left untreated, hardened plaque or tartar may enter your gums and cause jawbone disintegration and tooth loss.

Gum bleeding is one of the most recognizable signs of gum disease.

Aggressive Brushing

Many people think that toothbrushes with hard bristles will act as great abrasives for the teeth. On the contrary, they are more likely to bruise and scratch your gums causing them to bleed.

Incorrect Flossing Technique

Flossing is recommended by the American Dental Association to keep your teeth and gums healthy. If you have just started flossing, you may notice gum bleeding. Once your soft gum tissues get used to flossing, the bleeding will abate on its own.

When to See Your Dentist for Bleeding Gums?

At times, taking certain steps may stop the bleeding naturally. These include practicing good oral hygiene, quitting tobacco, reducing stress, and increasing the levels of vitamin C in your diet.

But, if your gums bleed frequently and you experience red or swollen gums, sensitivity, frequent bad breath, gum recession, or bite changes, you should see your dentist immediately.

If your gum bleeding is caused by gingivitis, your dentist will professionally clean your teeth as prophylaxis. For heavy tartar buildup under the gums, the dentist may recommend a deep cleaning through procedures such as root planing and scaling using special instruments like ultrasonic water scalers.

In case these treatments don’t suffice, you may be referred to a periodontist and advised to have gum surgery. In case your advanced periodontitis has caused bone loss, you may have to undergo an extraction.
